Construction of approximately 210 km of fibre-optic network infrastructure in Latvia, extending from Ainaži via the Riga Bypass and Bauska to Grenctāle. Citrus Solutions is responsible for constructing the fibre-optic network infrastructure along the entire route, delivering a high-quality, safe and sustainable solution while adapting construction methods to the specific conditions of each location. Works will be carried out simultaneously across several sections of the Via Baltica route, enabling a project of this scale to be delivered efficiently and within the planned timeframe.
5G Baltics is an international infrastructure project aimed at establishing continuous 5G network coverage along the Via Baltica transport corridor in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The project is expected to deliver a 663 km continuous 5G corridor from Tallinn to Kalvarija, with particular emphasis on seamless coverage in cross-border areas.
The new infrastructure will provide a foundation for connected and automated mobility (CAM), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and a wide range of future 5G-enabled services along one of Europe’s key transport corridors.
Challenge
The construction of 210 km of communications network infrastructure represents both a significant construction undertaking and a technological and organisational challenge.
The Via Baltica route passes through a wide variety of environments, including urban areas, rural landscapes and forests. The fibre-optic network route crosses roads, rivers, ditches, major road junctions, railway lines, gas pipelines and other existing infrastructure. As a result, a single construction method cannot be applied throughout the entire route. Each section requires the safest, most efficient and technically appropriate solution for the specific site conditions.
An additional challenge is that construction works will take place simultaneously at several locations, requiring precise planning, coordination of construction teams and close cooperation between all parties involved in the project.
Solution
Citrus Solutions will use a range of construction technologies for the fibre-optic network, depending on the characteristics of each location and the existing infrastructure.
In open areas, conventional trench construction will be used, while locations requiring roads or other infrastructure to be crossed will utilise trenchless technologies, including horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
These solutions make it possible to minimise the impact of construction works on existing infrastructure, traffic and the surrounding environment, including protecting tree root systems in urban areas.
Where suitable duct infrastructure is already available, it will be reused, with fibre-optic cables pulled or blown into the existing ducts.
By combining different construction technologies, Citrus Solutions can select the most efficient solution for each section of the Via Baltica route while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and sustainability throughout the project.
